La trilogie The Banner Saga est sortie sur une intervalle de six ans : on pourra facilement comprendre à quel point elle est importante pour Austin Wintory. Si on peut écouter les deux premiers volets pour leurs ambiances, le troisième s'apprécie vraiment pour sa technique et sa maturité. Austin Wintory accentue la pression à grands renforts de cuivres et n'hésite pas à aller vers la cacophonie ("Steel flowing as water") et même la dissonance ("Blades sing from below"). La meilleure des trois !

Une plongée dans l'inconnu avec avec des éléments déjà existants : c'est le paradoxe soulevé par Austin Wintory quand il évoque la bande-originale de The Banner Saga 2 d'autant plus que c'est la première fois qu'il compose pour une suite — et seul ce jeu vidéo a eu le droit à ce traitement de faveur. Pas de quoi avoir peur : elle est autant réussie que la première sinon plus. La pression est constante ("Under the Black Banner", "Threads Unweave"...) et les chants guerriers sont ensorcelants.

Une bande originale digne de Conan (pour ne citer que l'une des plus fameuses dans le genre), c'est dire si la qualité est au rendez-vous. Il ne me reste plus qu'à écouter la troisième symphonie de John Corigliano... J'en frémis d'avance.

Dans la bande-originale de Deformers, Austin Wintory refuse de se prendre au sérieux : il y réunit calembours, auto-parodie, mélange fantasque entre musique de western, flamenco et symphonies de cirque. Et pourtant, c'est d'une finesse incomparable ! La dernière fois que j'ai entendu une fusion entre bouffonnerie carnavalesque et voltige spectaculaire réussie à ce niveau, c'était sur les bandes-originales de Rayman Origins et Rayman Legends. "Embrace the silly but make it huge" ? Pari tenu !
